Every Child Counts.

Did you see on the news last week talk about a government scheme to provide 1 to 1 teaching for young children to improve their maths ability?  Well Birchfields is one of the lucky schools chosen to take part in the scheme!

We have been given some funding to set up and resource a special ‘Numbers Count’ room.  We have also been able to send Miss Rees to training provided by Edge hill University for her to become a specialist Numbers Count teacher.

Miss Rees has begun working with 4 children, developing for each a series of 40 FUN lessons tailored to each child’s skills, needs and likes.  Each child visits the Numbers Counbt room for half an hour every day to play games which develop maths skills.  Each lesson has at least 5 activities which are all designed to help the children enjoy maths as well as learn.

Numbers Count is designed for children in year 2 but many of the ideas and activities can easily be changed to suit younger or older children.  This web site and the display board on the corridor near Miss Offord’s office will contain lots of ideas, games and activities for parents and children to do together at home.  They will use things you can easily find for yourselves around the home, and will be quick and simple things to do.

We hope you will enjoy playing maths games with your child.  If you would like any help finding maths activities to do at home, please feel free to come and talk to Miss Rees at the very start of school in the Numbers Count room which is by the library near the Year 6 class rooms.

Thank you and get counting!
